A lamp that is surrounded by adjustable blinds designed by Enric Jovani and Mariona Cruells. This concept is more than merely decorative, by design it asks us to interact with light and mood, going beyond light being just a necessity.

Light is a part of our daily environment. Gives life to it, fills up the space and makes our movements easy. Imagine now that, apart from being capable to enjoy this light, we can manipulate it, play with it far from the traditional use of the switches. Surpassing the on/off routine, the lamp opens a whole univers of nuances and luminosities, a fan of ambients and situations within reach, allowing even to give form to diverse moods. Is not just an object, is a new way to interact with the light.

In this graduate project, Lotte van Wulfften Palthe utilizes both found and bought personal objects and materials to create large-scale worlds that take on an unique existence of their own. By changing the arrangement of objects, a new world is born and a make-believe quality is created. To give some pieces in each “world” a bit more personality, the designer gave them names: Henry (the lamp), Fred (the cabinet), and Sofia (the pouf).

You may have seen something like this before for wine, Out of Work (OOW) is a product specifically for you social beer drinkers. The idea was born when Barcelona-based designers Giovanna de Ávila and Joan Sunyol joined forces to create this design. Used to the Spanish tradition of “tapeo” (that’s the Spanish word for going to snack bars), they found that it was very uncomfortable to be standing at the same time with the dish and the glass in each hand.

OOW holds the beer glass allowing you to carry both dish and glass with just one hand. It allows you to drift with your friends without thinking “where did I leave my glass?” Each beer glass is artisan mouth-blown and each plate is hand made in ceramics. So, next time you’re off to the bar, it’s BYOG&P, or “bring your own glass and plate.”

ODE1647 is a new piece from Jacco Maris Design. It’s quite an impressive design, and I can see it working in a modern interior.

As the name implies, the ode 1647 collection is an ode to the luxurious chandeliers of the early 17th century.  The number 47 refers to the atomic number for silver. By using exciting new materials, we have created an entirely new and modern language of form. The arms are formed of braided copper with a UV coating. The ode 1647 is designed by Jacco Maris and Ben Quaedvlieg.

The collection consists of a 15-light chandelier, a nine-light chandelier, a nine-light ceiling lamp, a five-light wall lamp, a two-light wall lamp and a one-light wall lamp. The lamps are available in silver plated copper, black plated copper and copper. For the shades are nine different colors of velor and three different metallic colors available.

Cesar Cueva brings fresh new ideas to jewelry by mixing gold and silver with ideas of architectural structures and geometric shapes. These forms are often nestled together reminding us of city landscapes and housing structures.

Paper Tiger Products are home furnishings designed by Australian designer Anthony Dann inspired by folded forms and seamless construction. They are made of materials such as cardboard, and are packed flat for easy transportation. They assemble quickly and easily. Taking advantage of the deceptive strength of triangular folding, the designs are engineered to withstand all the rigors of heavy use.

Operating as both a design consultancy and a design brand, Paper Tiger works with clients interested in temporary structures and ephemeral experiences, as well as with the design of furniture and lighting for retail, events and exhibitions. The designs have been published both nationally and internationally, and won the 2007 Launch Pad award for Sustainability. Paper Tiger Products are made in Australia, and the stools are certified by Ecospecifier.

Last year at Malofiej, one of the major awards ceremonies for infographics in journalism, The New York Times took home ‘Best in Show’ for their work on box office receipts from 1986 to 2008. I’m sure most of you saw it. It was non-traditional. It was an adaptation of Lee Byron’s streamgraph, which he had previously applied to last.fm music listening habits - a smoothed stacked area chart at the core.

What followed was a lot of back chatter among the infographic community. Many didn’t like the interactive at all, despite winning an award voted on by peers. Some called it one of the worst graphics NYT had ever published, that it was too complicated for readers, and that it was too hard to read.

This surprised me.

It’s something I’ve come to expect from academics and the stat crowd but not from graphic departments that report the news. I had the impression that they were more open-minded, but I guess not all of them are.

This, from Hannah Fairfield, a New York Times graphics editor, is no doubt a response to the haters at this year’s Malofiej.

I obviously strongly agree. Although Hannah sort of implies that the streamgraph was a failure. I’d argue that it was a success. Hundreds of thousands of people, millions maybe, engaged with the box office data and there’s no obscene misrepresentations. Were the patterns too complex to understand for some people? Yeah, probably, but how else is the general public supposed to learn? They’ll get there eventually.
