Hi everyone,
I like art, and I like prints, I have a bunch of them in my flat but it was an absolute nightmare to find reasonably priced ones that I liked. There are lots of people like me who don’t want to put mass produced crappy posters on their walls, don’t want to go to a high street ‘art store’ for a Jack Vettriano reproduction or picture of a horse standing in a field, also like me most people don’t have a couple of grand to spend on an original painting.

It really bugged me that it was so hard to buy contemporary art that looked good didn't cost hundreds pounds and wasn't instantly sold out. After thinking about this for a while i decided to do something about it and started looking at the world of printing - the old fashioned way! Enter stage left screen printing! Screen printing is a manual printing process where by each colour in a print is separated and transferred onto a fine mesh. Ink is then pushed through each mesh and onto a canvas (or paper, t-shirt, plastic etc). The end result is an individual hand produced print. This process only works well for images with a small number of colours but due to the smooth application of ink it is absolutely perfect for producing contemporary styled illustrations (think: Banksy, Faile, Lucy McLauchlan, Modern Toss, David Shrigley) with lots of block colour.

Screen printing is used by lots of people for t-shirt and promotional printing, there are literally hundreds of companies selling screen printed t-shirts (along with crappy novelty products such as personalized pens and coffee mugs). Most of these are pretty middle-of-the-road however there are few companies such as www.threadless.com which actually have really good designs. The reason that threadless works so well is that is basically a big design competition with website visitors submitting designs they’d like to see made into t-shirts. Everyone who visits the website gets a chance to vote for their favourite designs and at the end of the month the best designs are turned into t-shirts. The result is a big open forum where designers can leave comments on each others work and the general public can buy the most popular t-shirts.

Print Specifications

In order for weloveyourwalls to produce prints from your designs, submissions must conform to the following critera:

- maximum of 5 colours (inc black)
- vector(prefered) or bitmap format
- landscape or portrait format
- if bitmap at least 300dpi
- each colour on a seperate layer
- B2 size (50cm by 70cm) aspect ratio

Note that submissions to the website should be 600px by 840px jpeg previews of your design. If you have work which is not digital but conforms to the other critera please get in touch, it may be suitable for scanning.

I’ve taken this concept and applied it to wall art. My website www.weloveyourwalls.com provides an online space where people can buy high quality, hand printed, limited edition artwork as well as submit their own designs with a chance of getting them printed (and earning quite a bit of money). The website is currently open in a pre-launch capacity, i.e. it’s not really intended for public consumption yet but i'd love you to take a look anyway! Here’s where you come in: www.weloveyourwalls.com relies entirely on user submitted content so I’m looking for talented people such as yourself to send in some submissions before I announce the website to the world.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be asking my friends, friends of friends and anyone else who’ll listen if they would be interested in uploading a design (or two!). If you have portfolio work that you think might be suitable or would like to design something new then I’d love to hear from you. Once your design is online you’ll get a lot exposure and if your design receives enough votes it will be turned into a print (and you'll get paid up to £750)
